Jake English
Jake English is a young man living on a Pacific island in the same room occupied by Jade Harley on pre-scratch Earth. His chumhandle is golgothasTerror.
Jake loves adventure and brawling, and speaks in a very peculiar, old-timey fashion. Naturally, he has many things in common with his pre-scratch counterpart, like his affinity for tomb-raiding, and firearms. He dislikes monsters and enjoys hunting. He also enjoys superhero comics, most notably Spider-Girl and the Hulk, which may be references to his crush on Aranea and his connections to Lord English respectively.
According to Jake's introduction page, he believes [t]here is a good SKULL at the heart of any mystery, haunting its EVERY PAGE. That is what you always say. Or at least, it is what you always HOPE. The capitalized words hint at his role as the Page of Hope.
Dirk Strider
Dirk Strider is the post-scratch incarnation of Dave's adopted Bro and ectobiological father. His chumhandle is timaeusTestified (TT).
Dirk tends to brag when it comes to his achievements, especially involving robots. He appears to enjoy criticizing Jake's infatuation with the fictional character Neytiri. He seems to be a fan of horses, judging by his room being filled with horse and pony themed posters. Dirk seems to have a high interest in teaching people lessons to help them in their personal development, such as when he insists Jake fights Brobot for uranium. He tries to make Jake more skeptical because he is very naive. This results in him coming off as obnoxious at times, trying to make his friends think more. He also has a big interest in smuppets and puppets in general.
Dirk is introduced as a PHILOSOPHER PRINCE, and he claims he doesn't have the HEART to be upset at his bro's absence; together, these phrases foreshadow his role as the Prince of Heart.
why do i ship them?
I can't speak for every Dirkjake shipper, BUUT the reasons why i ship them myself are the following ones:
contrast: Dirk is the embodiment of the male figure who always seems to be in control. He is perceived as calm and resolute, someone who “knows what he's doing,” as both Jane and Roxy describe him. EThis archetype pushes him to act quickly, as when Roxy hesitates to kiss Jane in order to revive her, a situation that Dirk resolves immediately, fulfilling what “a man should do.” This behavior reflects an internalized idea that a man should always be decisive, strong and functional, even in difficult times. Although this perception of himself also isolates him emotionally, trapping him in a mask of perfection that rarely allows him to show vulnerability.
On the other hand, Jake represents a constant struggle with his masculine identity. Unlike Dirk, Jake comes across as insecure, helpless and constantly manipulated by others, as with Jane and Aranea, who see him more as an object of desire than a person with agency of his own. His frequent tears and bewilderment reveal a fragility that he himself associates with the failure of “being a man.”
Dirk and Jake’s romantic relationship is based on mutual interest and a friendship established years prior to the main story. What a reader experiences over the course of Homestuck act 6 is how their insecurities boil to an all-time high once the Game is afoot, aggravating some of their worst habits - Like Dirk’s inability to communicate honestly without hiding behind one of his splinters (may they be metaphorical or literal), and Jake’s practiced avoidance in the face of confronting and potentially upsetting one of his friends about their shitty behavior - until it ultimately leads to a breakup.
